ANT INFESTATIONS

There are over 8000 known species of ants worldwide. They are a social insect that lives in colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies of 300,000 or more.

Each variety of ant differs greatly in the way they construct their nests, form their colonies and obtain their food.

Most ants are beneficial, some however need to be controlled because they either seek out the warmth of buildings, like the Pharaoh Ant (Monomorium pharaonis) or enter buildings in search of foodstuffs like the black garden ant (Lasius niger). This prompts the need for ant removal because ants carry, and can spread bacteria, including salmonella.

Ant control treatment plans should include killing the entire colony. Just spraying ants with an off-the-shelf ant repellant spray will only kill a few at best and scatter the colony.

Mistreating Pharaoh ants with the wrong chemical for example can cause the colony to bud as a defence mechanism with the adult ants forming satellite colonies in new locations, making the problem worse.

Qualified pest technicians know how to remove ant nests from lawns or houses quickly and effectively as they are one of the most common household nuisances.

The most effective control involves the use of an insecticide bait that is to the liking of the tastes of the target species which is then taken back to the nest for the colony to feed on. This way control of most ant infestations can occur in a relatively short space of time.
